FRANCO CAVALLI, FRCP, MD

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Prof. Franco Cavalli, M.D., born in Locarno, Switzerland in 1942, married, 7 children. Currently Director of the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland at Ospedale San Giovanni, in Bellinzona. At the beginning of his carrier his main interest was leukemia, at that time he represented Switzerland in the CALGB. Later on his research was concentrated on breast cancer, while for the last ten years malignant lymphoma has become his major interest. Since 1981 he organizes every third year the International Conference on Malignant Lymphoma in Lugano, Switzerland, which has become the main gathering point worldwide both for clinical as well as for basic research in lymphomas. He was the editor-in chief of Annals of Oncology and was a founder of the IELSG. Author or co-author of more than 400 scientific papers and of four books, among them together with S. Kaye and H. Hansen, the Text Book of Medical Oncology. He has received 12 International Awards, among them the Pezcoller Award, the NDDO Honorary Award, the Greidinger Award in Haifa (Israel) and the Waldman Award in Omaha, Nebraska.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Dr. Emanuele ZUCCA, M.D., born in Turin, Italy in 1957, Married, two daughters. Responsible for the lymphoma research at the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland. His research programs have been devoted to the application of molecular methods for the detection of minimal residual disease in lymphomas, to elucidate the effect of antibiotic therapy in low grade gastric MALT lymphomas and to study the the antigen-dependent mechanisms in the development of this type of lymphoma. He is a co-founder of the IELSG (The International Extranodal Lymphomas Study Group) which is running several co-operative clinical and pathological studies. Author or co-author of more than 70 scientific papers published on peer-reviewed journals and of more than 80 communications at major international scientific meetings. Active member of the European Society for Clinical Oncology (ESMO), European Haematology Association (EHA), Swiss Society for Oncology (SSO), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

FRANCESCO BERTONI, MD

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Dr Francesco Bertoni, M.D., born in Rome, Italy in 1969. Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Department of Haematology at the Barts and The London-Queen Mary's School of Medicine and Dentistry. His research programs have been devoted to the molecular biology of cancer with a particular interest for non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. He has been now working in London on the application of DNA micro-array technology to the study of lymphomas. Author or co-author of more than 40 scientific papers published on peer-reviewed journals and of more than 30 communications at international scientific meetings. Member of the European Society for Clinical Oncology (ESMO), American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). He actively participates to the International Extranodal Lymphomas Study Group (IELSG).
